(1.74) What is Supported Employment?

“Supported employment” is a vocational placement option that has been primarily used for persons with developmental disabilities. Under state law (the “Lanterman Act”) this means paid work in an integrated setting in the community in which persons with and without disabilities interact. The employee can be hired by an employer in the community directly or through a (Regional Center or Department of Rehabilitation) contract with a supported employment agency. Typically, ongoing support services are provided to the employee so that she may keep the job. [California Welfare and Institutions Code (Cal. Welf. & Inst. Code) Secs. 4851(n)- (p).] This vocational placement option should also be available to persons with other disabilities.
