(2.24) Do I have the right to examine and/or get copies of my child’s educational records?

Federal regulations require school districts to comply with a parent’s request to inspect and review educational records without unnecessary delay and in no case more than 45 days after the request has been made.  [34 C.F.R. Sec. 300.613.] However, state law gives parents the right to examine and receive copies of all school records within five (5) business days from the date of an oral or written request.[Cal. Ed. Code Sec. 56504.]

The school district may charge no more than the actual cost of reproducing the records. If this charge effectively prevents a parent from getting copies, the copies shall be provided at no cost. [34 C.F.R. Sec. 300.617; Cal. Ed. Code Sec. 56504.]
