(5.34) If my child is placed full time in a general education classroom are they entitled to receive related services?

(5.34) If my child is placed full time in a general education classroom are they entitled to receive related services?

Yes. The education program for all students in special education must be based on individual needs.[1] Any student who meets the eligibility requirements for special education is entitled to the related services needed to help the child benefit from special education.[2]

Special education law favors placement in general education classrooms whenever possible.[3]. Students are thus entitled to receive supportive services that will enable them to access their education in a general education classroom environment.[4] Students with disabilities who are not eligible for special education under the IDEA, but who qualified for services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (See Chapter 16 Information on Section 504 and Disability-Based Discrimination) are also eligible for related aids and services designed to meet their individual educational needs.[5]
