(10.23) Can my child enroll in a general education vocational program?

Yes. General education vocational programs usually include classroom and lab instruction focusing on either an occupational area (for example, business) or a specific occupation (for example, computer programmer).

Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, students with disabilities cannot be denied access to existing vocational programs because of disability-related needs, such as for aides, or because of architectural barriers.

For students enrolled in special education, placement in a general education vocational program —with appropriate support services — can offer the advantage of interaction with nondisabled students and, depending on your student’s goals, may more closely resemble workplace settings your child will encounter when they leave school and go to work.
